Learning about aspects of horsemanship besides riding is an integral ethos of Stoke Lane Stables. Getting your hands dirty is what it is all about!

The first step is learning that what goes in must come out and effective manure management is a vital part of horse care and ownership. SLS pride ourselves on neat, precise muck heaps which are regularly removed. We also harrow the fields which enables parasites to be bleached and killed by the sun, stopping their life cycle. In our smaller paddocks, children are set to task by poo-picking and, of course, daily mucking out of stables is essential for a clean, hygienic and stress-free environment for our horses.

From making sure water buckets are topped up regularly with clean, fresh water and breaking ice in freezing temperatures to maintaining a precise feeding regime - it is all a huge part of the stable management tuition we offer at SLS. Our separate feed room allows for a suitable environment for children to learn all about different types of roughage and concentrates in horses’ feeds. We encourage healthy, carefully controlled diets for all the horses tailored to their individual exercise plan and general health needs.

Children are also shown how medicines should be administered in demonstrations from our visiting vet and they also regularly see our farrier at work and are encouraged to ask questions.

Each child cleans their own tack after every ride and the last session riders will also oil the leather if needed. This is so we can keep regular checks on all the leatherwork to determine it is safe and fit for purpose. Weekly checks by the Yard Manager also give you further peace of mind that your child’s safety is paramount.

Stables and the general yard areas are always clean and tidy by the end of the sessions; stable management is recognised as one of the main themes of SLS.
