Groundwork is essential because each horse has a unique personality and it is important to understand that the horse is not a machine but a thinking, sentient being.

At SLS, we offer tuition in lunging, long reining, and pole work so children can see how important it is to work from the ground up to gain trust, balance and a positive relationship.

Join-up is particularly effective using non-aggressive positive reinforcement training to establish a unique bond that further develops the relationship between horse and rider. We have extensive knowledge of in-hand showing at national and county level with our Dartmoor ponies here at SLS, and we draw upon that experience to encourage our riders that being on the ground is just as competitive as being under saddle.

We have a separate smaller paddock that serves as an ideal location for pole exercises and a round pen for lunging so work can be undertaken simultaneously with different ponies.

‘Handy pony’ exercises and gymkhana games such as walking over tarpaulin or weaving for desensitisation of nervous horses are really good fun and often turns into a great competition.
