Stoke Lane Stables has a strict policy when it comes to correct safety equipment for handlers and riders. They will need to wear a correctly fitted riding hat (conforming to approved safety guidelines), heeled boots and a body protector.

Horse riding, and SLS in particular, requires a natural environment. So your child should wear long trousers or leggings, and please dress for the weather. Jodhpurs or breeches are more comfortable in the long term. In the hot summer, please make sure that you are wearing a top/shirt that covers the shoulder and upper arm. Vest tops, shorts, trainers, and sandals are not appropriate and we will not let you ride for health and safety reasons.

No; not initially. We have a variety of hats, boots, gloves and body protectors in many sizes for use during the riding sessions. However, it is recommended that you purchase your own if your child is considering lessons long-term.

Most riding schools have body protectors as an option and only enforce their use when jumping or cross country. At Stoke Lane Stables, it is mandatory for all children under the age of 16 to wear a body protector for any discipline in riding; hats and gloves are mandatory for lunging or long reining.

Gloves are a really good idea to start wearing as soon as you are learning to ride. Not only does this protect the hands whilst riding avoiding blisters, but are also more hygienic when handling manure!
